Korova’s Last Canoe Builder

20170729_Artalk

AN article published on ArTalk, Fiji’s independent online art magazine, featured the story of Semiti Paki of Korova, Suva; originally from Moce, in the Lau group, and the relationship built with Pacific Blue Foundation. Dr B. Gregory Mitchell, PBF’s chairman of directors, directed the creation of the annual canoe racing event, Veitau Waqa – The Boat Lives, in 2009 with the people of Korova. Semiti is one of a very few which still posses the knowledge and the intricate steps of canoe building. The Veitau Waqa revives the ancient celebration revolving canoe design, building and sailing.
